Money Talks: What It Says and Why It Matters is a two-week study that explores what God’s Word teaches us about money.

In Week 1, Pastor Scott Worthington teaches from 1 Timothy 6:17–19. The Bible speaks often about money because money reveals what’s in our hearts. In this sermon, we learned that Jesus isn’t after our money — He’s after our hearts. The way we spend reflects what we value, what we prioritize, and where we place our trust.

This message challenges us to see money for what it truly is: a tool. Not something to be used only for ourselves, but something God desires to work through us.

Week 1: What Our Money Says

“As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.” 1 Timothy 6:17-19

Why we need this series:
1. We hear about money every day from the world. We need to hear about money from God’s word.
2. We need to be discipled as it pertains to biblical finances
3. I want you to experience the freedom of truly trusting God with your finances.

Why some don’t like talking about money:
1. We are skeptical of what preachers say
2. We are skeptical of what the Bible says
3. We are skeptical because of what our money (or lack thereof) says

Four Realities About Money:
1. The Bible talks a lot about money

“Beware lest you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth.’ You shall remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth…” Deuteronomy 8:17–18

“Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce…” Proverbs 3:9

“In the blink of an eye wealth disappears, for it will sprout wings and fly away like an eagle.” Proverbs 23:5 (NLT)

“He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves wealth with his income; this also is vanity.” Ecclesiastes 5:10

The Bible says a lot about money because money says a lot about us.

“Jesus says more about money than sex, heaven, and hell. Money is a big deal to Jesus.” John Piper

“‘For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.’” Matthew 6:21

Your money doesn’t follow your heart; your heart follows your money.

Four Realities About Money:
2. Money is an easy thing to put our hope in

“As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy.” 1 Timothy 6:17

Fast Facts:

  • More than 3 billion people live on less than $6 per day.

  • Half the world lives on roughly $175 a month.

“One sentence was enough to teach this young man the truth about himself that had been hidden all these years. There was a god in his life which he prized more than the true God.” Sinclair Ferguson

“Show me where a man spends his time and money, and I’ll show you his god.” Martin Luther

What does your money say about what matters most to you?

Four Realities About Money:
3. Money is a terrible thing to put our hope in

“As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy.” 1 Timothy 6:17

“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” Matthew 6:33

“‘No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.’” Matthew 6:24

“Wealth has a way of knitting a man’s heart to this world.” C.S. Lewis

“Anything I wanted, I would take. I denied myself no pleasure. I even found great pleasure in hard work, a reward for all my labors. But as I looked at everything I had worked so hard to accomplish, it was all so meaningless—like chasing the wind.” Ecclesiastes 2:10-11

“I have made many millions, but they have brought me no happiness.” John D. Rockefeller

Four Realities About Money:
4. There is a better way

“They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.” 1 Timothy 6:18-19
