Love Language Week 6: The Body of Christ

Love Language: What God Says About Relationships
Sep 14, 2025
John 13:34–35

In week 6 of our series, Love Language: What God Says About Relationship, we were honored to hear from Pastor Patrick Detkin, our Lead Pastor of Care and Community. He preached from John 13:34–35.

The church is not an event you attend, it’s a family to which you belong. And when you belong to a family, it’s not just about you; it’s about others. God calls us to love one another, and this sermon explores what it means to belong to His family and how we can love His family.

Love Language: What God Says About Relationships
Week 6: The Body of Christ

“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” John 13:34–35

Instead of saying…
“I got to church on Sundays.”
We begin saying…
“We are the church, everyday.”

Instead of saying…
“I hope the message and music are good.”
We begin saying…
“We bring our gifts to bless others.”

Instead of saying…
“I am not really needed.”
We begin saying…
“God placed us here for a purpose.”

The church is not an event you attend it’s a family to which you belong.

“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.” John 13:34

How did Jesus love us?
* He washed dirty feet. - John 13:14–15
* He served people who didn’t deserve it. - Mark 10:45
* He forgave. - Luke 23:34
* He gave up His life. -  John 15:13

“For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ.” 1 Corinthians 12:12

3 Truths Regarding What It Means to Be Part of a Church Family
#1 Truth – Every Part Matters

“The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I have no need of you,’ nor again the head to the feet, ‘I have no need of you.’ On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, and on those parts of the body that we think less honorable we bestow the greater honor, and our unpresentable parts are treated with greater modesty,” 1 Corinthians 12:21-23

#2 Truth – Every Part Needs the Other
“The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I have no need of you,’ nor again the head to the feet, ‘I have no need of you.’” 1 Corinthians 12:21

The church needs you, but YOU also need the church.

“That there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another. If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together.” 1 Corinthians 12:25–26

“So, in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.” Romans 12:5

“Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves… Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. Live in harmony with one another.” Romans 12:9–16

#3 Truth – Every Part Has a Function
“From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.” Ephesians 4:16

“I go to church on Sundays.” to “We are the church, everyday”
“I hope the message and music are good.” to “We bring our gifts to bless others.”
“I am not really needed.” to “God placed us here for a purpose.”

“And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts.” Acts 2:42-26
